Wintering a boat in Sweden: our guide

Wintering a boat in Sweden: our guide

On the Baltic Sea, Sweden is an ideal destination for wintering a boat: sailboats and motorboats can spend several months here in excellent conditions, just a stone's throw from a fantastic sailing area. In some Swedish marinas, boaters will find the perfect solution for wintering in Sweden, either afloat or dry.

Where to store your boat in Sweden?

In western Sweden, Göteborg is not only the country’s largest port, but also the largest port in the Nordic countries. With its long maritime history, the city welcomes over 10,000 ships a year, ranging from small sailing boats to huge ocean liners and the largest container ships.

On the Kattegatt Sea, at the mouth of the River Göta, boaters have a number of options for wintering their vessels in a shipping area with heavy traffic.

Whether you own a sailboat or a motorboat, it’s also possible to winter a vessel in the Baltic Sea, on the country’s east coast. In our opinion, the Stockholm area is an easier wintering solution, in a quieter, more authentic region.

Boat wintering in Stockholm, for example, means you can leave your boat in the Swedish capital: a city with a rich maritime history, easily reached by train, plane, car or boat from most of Europe’s major cities.

Stockholm is a lively, welcoming cultural and tourist destination, where you’re sure to enjoy a delightful stay.

Good to know: in Sweden, wintering options vary from one marina to another, depending on the facilities available to boaters.

Afloat or dry, only for small boats or also for larger yachts, only for monohulls or also for catamarans… Depending on the Swedish wintering port you wish to use, we advise you to find out all you can about it!

The advantages of wintering your boat in the Baltic Sea

Compared with the country’s west coast, there are more options for wintering a boat in the Baltic Sea. And it’s no coincidence: the Stockholm region offers many advantages for storing a vessel…

Wintering in Stockholm, the boat’s good condition preserved

It’s important to know that climatic conditions are better on Sweden’s east coast than in the west of the country: the Stockholm region enjoys a continental climate, with slightly cooler temperatures than in Gothenburg, but above all a much drier environment.

It’s the perfect place to store your ship for the winter!

As a general rule, there is little bad weather or heavy “gales” around Stockholm, which limits the risk of damage to stopped boats. In autumn and winter on the east coast of Sweden, there’s also less rain: for all boaters who choose this area for outdoor wintering – afloat or dry, they’re faced with less humidity. This is an important criterion when it comes to limiting mold growth on your boat!

Finally, the low salinity of the Baltic Sea is also an advantage: in the Stockholm area, the risk of corrosion of the ship and its equipment is much lower than in the west of the country.

By opting for the Baltic Sea, the boater will be choosing a safe wintering place, which will enable him to keep his vessel, for several months or years, in the best conditions and in safety.

All the products and services you need for pleasure boating

Stockholm and the surrounding area is also a prime wintering location, thanks to the presence of companies specializing in the boating industry: around the Swedish capital, a number of modern marinas offer everything sailors need to handle, maintain or repair their boats. It’s not for nothing that the Swedish capital has become one of Europe’s hotspots for boating enthusiasts!

In the Stockholm area, boaters can choose a wintering port where they can store their vessel in water or dry, in the open air or under cover – in a shed. If necessary, they will benefit from the expertise and advice of local professionals.

Last but not least, every crew will be able to find the on-board equipment and navigation instruments they need, in a number of specialist stores.

Around the capital, a great sailing area

Last but not least, Stockholm and its archipelago constitute a unique sailing area, which boaters can discover quickly and easily, from spring onwards.

The Stockholm archipelago, Gotland Island, Öland Island and even the Finnish islands of Åland… you’ll need more than a season’s sailing to explore them all!

Port Adhoc Sverige, a Swedish winter port

The Port Adhoc group, which manages ports and marinas throughout Europe, offers yachtmen the opportunity to winterize their boats in Sweden, at the Svinninge marina. Also known as Port Adhoc Sverige, this marina offers prime locations for boat storage in Sweden, particularly in winter.

Just a 30-minute drive from Stockholm, or 30 kilometers, our wintering port on the Baltic Sea offers nearly 2,000 storage spaces, both afloat and dryoutdoors and indoors, in a specially adapted hangar. Extensive handling facilities enable the professionals on site to accommodate all vessels up to 20 tons, for periods ranging from several weeks to several months.

Another advantage of Port Adhoc Sverige is that, on land, the configuration of the premises gives every owner the possibility of accessing his or her vessel, for example to work on board, or to carry out a particular project.

Thanks to the airy layout of the boats, all vessels can be launched and taken out of the water at any time, by appointment, from early January to late December.
