Svinninge Marina protects the marine environment

Waste management

Svinninge Marina has long been a pioneer in environmental initiatives for recreational boat harbors, with waste management playing a key role in our efforts.

> We make it easy to dispose of different types of waste:

A recycling station is conveniently located at the marina exit. Multiple containers for boat maintenance waste are available in the winter storage areas. Small waste bins are placed at every dock and throughout the marina.
We have designed and built an environmental station that now serves as a model for others.

> Toilet tanks pump-out

There are three pump-out stations available at the marina, free to use for Svinninge Marina berth holders. For portable toilet waste disposal, a dedicated facility is available in the service building.

Eco-friendly hull cleaning

At Svinninge Marina, we offer a hull cleaning station where environmentally hazardous wash water is collected and treated. Consider skipping antifouling paint and using our hull cleaning service during the summer instead.

> Hull paint measurement using XRF

Svinninge Marina has acquired an XRF instrument to efficiently measure the presence of heavy metals and biocides in antifouling paints. XRF stands for “X-Ray Fluorescence,” a reliable and non-invasive method for identifying and quantifying metals in boat hull coatings. The instrument detects all common metals but primarily focuses on copper, zinc, lead, and tin. Measurements are taken at eight different points on the hull, and an average value is calculated to assess the composition of the antifouling paint. We can issue a certificate upon request, which can serve as proof for potential buyers or if required by a yacht club.

For more information or to schedule a measurement, please contact the harbour master office.

> Environmentally friendly hull paint removal

For those looking to remove antifouling paint, the most efficient and environmentally friendly method is indoor blasting. We have a purpose-built blasting facility that accommodates boats up to 16 meters in length. (Outdoor blasting is strictly prohibited.)

For inquiries regarding blasting services, please contact Plastskador och Montage AB.

Environmental regulations

Since welcoming our first boat, we have worked diligently to implement eco-friendly practices. Antifouling paints are becoming an increasing problem in both marine and freshwater environments, as well as in boat storage areas. It is crucial that we take immediate action to reverse this trend.

> Key regulations at Svinninge Marina:

  • Pressure washing is not allowed when boats are on land.
  • When sanding, scraping, or painting the hull, the ground must be covered with a tarp or similar material. Plastic curtains should be placed around the boat to prevent paint residue and dust from spreading. All waste must be collected and disposed of at the environmental station.
  • A vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter must always be used. Waste should be emptied at the environmental station.
  • Blasting is not permitted anywhere on the marina grounds. However, we offer an indoor blasting service in our purpose-built facility, where Plastskador och Montage can assist with environmentally friendly antifouling paint removal.

> What would convince you to stop using toxic antifouling paint?

  • Hull cleaning service: Instead of painting, you can haul your boat out during the summer for an eco-friendly hull wash at a discounted price. The wash water is collected and purified in our treatment system.
  • Ashore storage option: Keep your boat on land during the summer and launch it only when needed, eliminating fouling issues.

Would any of these options work for you? Together, we can reduce the use of toxic antifouling paints and protect our waters.
